Face Off: Mineral Makeup vs. Traditional Makeup

Posted by Haley Asbridge on

Could your daily makeup application be undoing all the hard work of your current skincare regime? Ash Cometti investigates.

Have you ever taken the time to read the ingredients list on the back of your favourite foundation or your most-loved mascara?

Chances are you won’t be able to pronounce half of the ingredients shown, let alone decipher which ones are sourced from nature.

In recent years, the trend towards more natural beauty products has driven up the demand for mineral makeup. It’s hardly a surprise, considering the multitude of benefits mineral makeup can offer the skin over its traditional predecessors.

Mineral makeup acts as the final step in your skincare regime
Think of mineral makeup as a skincare/makeup hybrid – it has the power to transform the appearance of any complexion, while boosting skin health thanks to the host of natural ingredients contained within. Formulated in a laboratory, these ingredients are almost chemically identical to what’s found in nature.

Traditional makeup may contain harmful ingredients
Think preservatives, talc, wax, dye, parabens, artificial fragrances, cheap fillers as well as petroleum-based and synthetic ingredients, all of which aren’t kind to skin. Typically, traditional makeup is comedogenic, meaning it can clog pores and result in open comedones (blackheads) or closed comedones (whiteheads). The inclusion of synthetic fragrances can heighten skin sensitivity, while bulking talc can dry out the skin, causing an overproduction in oil.

Mineral makeup is both versatile and buildable
Gone are the days of mineral makeup being available in limited shade ranges and only offering the lightest veil of coverage. Today, mineral makeup comes in a variety of pigments that can be used wet or dry to add colour to lips, cheeks or eyes. Plus the lightweight consistency of mineral-based powders means they can be applied in layers to achieve the amount of coverage desired.

Traditional makeup is often less pigmented
Some powder foundations contain less pigment, which means you need to apply more of it to require the right look or level of coverage you’re after. The issue with poorly pigmented foundations (or those that don’t have strong colour payoff) is that by applying it in layers can mean the finish is streaky or patchy. Not very chic.

Mineral makeup is suitable for sensitive skin
Fewer ingredients means less chance of irritation, which is good news for those with sensitive or reactive skin. Whether you struggle with perioral dermatitis, rosacea, acne or have a compromised skin barrier, it’s important to note how differently mineral makeup sits. Try a mineral-based loose powder, which sits on top of the skin instead of absorbing in. This helps keep pores clear and allows the skin to breathe, therefore minimising the chance of irritation.

Traditional makeup can settle into fine lines and wrinkles
The addition of talc into traditional makeup can mean instead of blurring imperfections, it highlights them. The result is a base that creases and doesn’t sit evenly on the skin. Mineral makeup is designed to feel like a second skin, and looks to micronised particles to ensure it is lightweight and comfortable to wear all day. Plus, it can withstand different temperatures, keeping makeup meltdowns at bay.

Six Reasons Why You Should Invest In Your Skin

Posted by Haley Asbridge on

It seems the old adage: “you get what you pay for” also rings true for skincare.. When it comes to your face, now’s not the time to be thrifty – investing in your skin now will pay dividends later!

Regular skin treatments and consistent use of products suited to your skin type and concern can help prevent premature ageing, protect against environmental damage, combat dehydration and ensure your skin looks its glowing, radiant best in the future. Invest in your skin now and your future face will thank you for it.

If achieving lasting, impactful results is top of your skincare agenda, then trusting a qualified skin expert with your in-clinic treatments and allowing them to prescribe your at-home regimen should be top priority.

You wouldn’t expect a gourmet meal from your local drive-through, so why would you expect dramatic results from fast food’s answer to skincare?!

Allow the Mooi Skin team to help you become better acquainted with your skin – learn how it functions and how best to care for it. Understanding your skin’s specific needs and how you can support its function is the key to skin confidence!

Here, we’ve compiled six reasons why you should invest in your skin this season.

  1. SKIN TREATMENTS BACKED BY SCIENCE Every machine at Mooi Skin has been carefully selected for it’s proven efficacy. Hours of research has gone into choosing which machines are integral to certain skin treatments. For example, Mooi Skin offers LED light treatments, however the machine used to offer this service is triple the price of those available in low-cost clinics that use less effective machinery. Don’t be fooled, while a cheap treatment may seem enticing, wouldn’t you rather spend a little more and get the results in half the time?
  2. PROVEN SKINCARE This is no ordinary #shelfie. The brands stocked on Mooi Skin’s shelves and in its treatment rooms are praised for their dermatologist stamp of approval. From the high performance Aspect range through to Cosmedix’s plant-based offering, Mooi Skin is selective with which products align with its skin philosophy.
  3. STAFF THAT KNOW THEIR STUFF The Mooi Skin team understands skin. Each member holds international esthetician qualifications and a minimum of six years’ industry experience. Unlike many other clinics, where staff have little experience or new graduates from beauty college, the Mooi Skin team undergo months of training both in and out of the clinic before they can perform any advanced skin treatments. Like many industries, good help is hard to find, so Mooi Skin pays a premium to have such specialised skin experts on staff.
  4. WHERE SKINCARE MEETS WELLNESS The treatments offered at Mooi Skin are so much more than just that. Upon Mooi Skin’s inception in 2018, founder Haley Asbridge sought out to create a relaxing space that helped clients unwind no matter what their treatment entailed. “I believe relaxation is just as important as a good treatment for the skin to get results,” Haley explains. Like many lifestyle factors, stress can wreak havoc on the skin and aggravate many skin conditions, so basing Mooi Skin around holistic practices was a key focus for Haley.
  5. CONSISTENCY IS KEY Good things take time, which is why the team recommends pairing a course of in-clinic treatments with a home-based skincare regimen to see dramatic skin improvements. While it won’t happen overnight, this tailored approach will mean changes will be visible in due course.
  6. MAKEUP WILL SIT MORE EVENLY While many women will happily shell out hundreds of dollars on the latest eye palette or serum-based foundation, there’s little point in building up an impressive makeup collection if the canvas on which you’re applying such products isn’t its glowing, radiant best. Healthy, hydrated skin acts as an ideal base for flawless makeup application. Check out the cult favourite Curtis Collection makeup range available at Mooi.

So what is the real benefit of having facials?

Posted by Haley Asbridge on

70% of your skin results are from what you do at home every day (your skin nutrition) and 30% are from in salon treatments.  If you can do both, that is ideal and if you can only do one or the other, then cosmeceutical and medical grade skincare is the best place to start.

How do I know what facial is best?

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by the skincare jargon. There are so many different variants of facials now, it’s harder and harder to keep up.

A good skincare therapist will recommend what is best suited to your skin, create a bespoke facial and give you a personalised plan and advice to ensure you get the best results possible.

At Mooi Skin we like to focus on the complete experience when treating clients, combining both old-school skincare and relaxation techniques with clinical know-how to deliver the best results. Your facial may include several components such as an enzyme exfoliation or a peel, a face mask, massage, light therapy or collagen induction therapy.  We have a huge variety of skincare treatments and products to suit all skins and get you your desired results.

What is best for my skin? Machines or hands on treatments?

A combination of both is best in my opinion.

Stress is a big factor in ageing so we combine our advanced machine based treatments with hands on relaxation techniques to give you the best of both worlds.

I often compare skincare and facials to diet and exercise.  They go hand in hand and both benefit each other!  Together they are  the perfect combination to achieve your best skin.

There are so many different types of machines on the market and they are not all created equal.  LED lights is a great example of this. A great quality FDA approved LED machine makes the skin glow, increases hyaluronic acid and collagen and gives fantastic long lasting results in the skin.  Some machines of  low quality will not get you the result you are after. It could be just as beneficial to hang the Christmas tree lights over your face.  You will be able to see and feel the results of effective regular treatments. Don’t hesitate to ask your therapist the background of what they are using and why they have chosen this  for your skin.

What results can I expect from a facial

A facial works to improve the overall appearance of your skin while targeting specific skin concerns.

Facials are a wonderful way to thoroughly address particular concerns that crop up, as well as a good way to maintain the youthfulness of the skin and overall skin health.

Post-facial, expect smoother skin texture, brighter more refined skin, and an overall radiance with less congestion and breakouts. Ideally, I recommend a facial once per month  to maintain your skin with a course of treatments once per year to keep the skin in the best possible condition(see my  blog on DIY facials if you are unable to make time for an appointment this frequently).

The Benefits Of Skin Peels

Posted by Haley Asbridge on

Peels have changed so much over the years however the name can still be a little daunting.  Many years ago deep chemical peels were a huge trend however these unnecessarily destroyed healthy tissue while trying to correct other skin conditions.

Todays peels are innovative, non – traumatic and we use them to stimulate healthy change in the skin to create a beautiful, renewed complexion with minimal downtime.

What is a peel?

A peel is a deep form of exfoliation that has some form of Aha (alpha hydroxy acid) or BHA (Beta hydroxy Acid) to encourage desquamation and promote skin renewal through new cell growth.

What will a peel do for my skin?

We have a huge range of peels at Mooi Skin to suit all skin types and conditions so we can improve pigmentation, ageing, problem skins and oily skins.  We will choose a peel for your skin type and condition to address your concerns and at the same time nourish  the skin.  Todays peels are game changers in the skin care industry and you will see positive visible changes from your first treatment.
A peel will continue working on the skin for 10 days following your treatment.

What is the difference between a peel and a microdermabrasion?

Peels use gentle and nourishing ingredients to exfoliate the skin and they do much more than just exfoliate the skin.  Peels are a nourishing treatment for the skin and at the same time as exfoliating they allow active ingredients to be delivered deep into the skin.

Microdermabrasion’s main action is to physically exfoliate the skin and attempt to stimulate collagen.  Microdermabrasion alone is an inadequate at improving any skin condition or aging concerns. The only way to truly change your skin long term is by good topical nutrition, which would take the form of your daily cosmeceutical grade skincare and progressing to nutritional peels, led lights and vitamin infusion treatments.

Microdermabrasion is an aggressive exfoliation treatment, with a purely physical effect that can aggravate conditions such as acne, rosacea, dry and ageing skin. We believe the temporary improvement in skin is outweighed by the negative long term impact.

Will my skin peel after my treatment?

This varies between clients and peels but yes there is a chance your skin will be a little flakey and peel.  This is the excess skin that is not needed and you will notice that new fresh skin is revealed leaving you with a more even appearance and a gorgeous glowing looking skin.

Do peels help with breakouts?

Yes!  Peels are one of the most effective treatments for breakouts.  A skin with breakouts and congestion often has a build up of dead cells and sebum in the pores.  A peel can penetrate into the pores to help unclogg those follicles causing congestion.  By removing the  top layer of dead skin cells this will also help prevent further breakouts as the oil will flow freely.

Are peels good for an ageing skin?

Peels are one of the best treatments to do if you are concerned with ageing.  We have some incredible peels to treat ageing, decrease sunspots and increase collagen.  We call these our tomorrow peels.  To have these peels you need to be on retinol 2 weeks prior to your peel.  They are designed to nourish the skin, remove dead skin cells, increase the natural moisturising factor and remodel collagen.
The end result is the surface of your skin will be smoother, more refined and have a healthy even glow all while your collagen is increasing and strengthening below the surface of the skin to give you younger, healthier skin sooner.

Which peel is the right one for me?

We need to asses your skin to determine what the best treatment is for you.  Book in for a skin consultation and your therapist can advise you on the right peel for you.

Eye Care

Posted by Haley Asbridge on

When it comes to restoring a youthful look, your eyes are your greatest opportunity.

The eyes are the first to go and the most important to fix.  Whether it’s wrinkles, hollowness, puffiness, or just plain tired-looking, your eyes experience ageing before any other part of your face. Several factors make the eyes more vulnerable and prone to ageing:

  1. The skin itself is very thin and therefore more susceptible to breaking down and increased laxity resulting in fine lines and wrinkles, becoming looser, and even thinner.
  2. The tissue below the eyes is naturally missing a lot of essential elements that make your skin strong
  3. Stress, lack of sleep and poor diet can exacerbate ageing and it certainly shows on the eyes first.

What to do? Say YES to eye cream!!

Eye products have been specifically formulated with special delivery systems to ensure ingredients actually give the eyes what they need (collagen-stimulating ingredients) where it’s needed, if you want to get scientific it’s in the fibroblasts cells within the dermis.

There are tons of anti-ageing ingredients out there, but only a handful of them truly have an impact on your eyes.  The tried and true formulas include peptides and vitamin C, which are the cardinal collagen stimulators.   However, you can also add ingredients like retinol (to smooth the skin’s surface and minimize discolouration) and hyaluronic acid (to pull moisture in the skin and negate the crepey texture that dry skin can create)

Eye creams we love! Environ Youth Essential Eye Gel – $114 is perfect for all aspects of ageing.  We stock a wide range of products that target all concerns.   Pop into clinic and the Mooi Skin experts can assess what’s right for you.

Myth buster: Many consumers believe that creams with collagen in them are good for actually firming the skin.  Sorry but this is not true, if only it was that easy! The same goes for ingesting collagen: it does not magically add more collagen to your skin. The only way to give your skin more collagen is by making your skin create more of its own collagen, which is exactly what the above ingredients do.

Protect your eyes from the sun!

You have heard it before but it’s so important that I can’t miss it out.. UV rays are so harmful to the skin and even more so to the delicate skin around your eyes.  These break down your collagen like nothing else! An SPF should be worn daily and where possible wear a good quality pair of sun glasses to prevent sun damage and squinting.  A nice big hat is perfect for those summer months.

Hydrate and get a good 7+ hours sleep each night.

We all know this but do we do it? We have all woken up the next day after a few too many drinks, looking a bit worse for wear, you can visibly see the difference in your skin, especially around your eyes.  Lack of sleep, high sugar, caffeine and alcohol all contribute to those tired looking eyes and dull skin.

Sleep, water and good fats are essential for ageing gracefully and keeping your eyes bright and rejuvenated ? Look after yourself, try and get to bed a couple of hours before midnight every night and you will start to wake up looking and feeling rested.

Choosing the right product or treatment can be quite overwhelming, the team at Mooi are here to help and support you, and we want you to be best version of yourself both inside and out.  Pop into clinic and we will be happy to give you a consultation and suggest the best treatment to suit you and you’re your skin.
