Pigmentation is caused by excess melanin, the pigment-producing powerhouse in your skin.
When these ‘melanocytes’ go into overdrive — triggered by sun exposure, hormones, inflammation, or past injury — you’re more likely to see darker patches of skin & uneven skin tone.
Common types we see:
- Sun spots: Those freckle-like marks that show up on sun-exposed areas, often deepening with age.
- Melasma: Larger patches of pigmentation, commonly linked to hormones, pregnancy, or the pill.
- Post-inflammatory pigmentation: The dark shadows that linger after acne, eczema, or skin trauma.

Steps you can take at home
- Understand the cause — whether it's sun exposure, hormones, or inflammation, the trigger will help guide the treatment and expected results.
- SPF every day, no exceptions. Mineral (zinc-based) SPF is best for pigmentation, acting as a physical shield against UV. Reapply every 2–4 hours.
- Wear a hat and sunglasses — UV exposure through the eyes can also trigger melanin production.
- Avoid picking at breakouts or wounds to reduce risk of post-inflammatory pigmentation.
- Manage inflammation through stress, diet, and skin-calming routines.
- Use targeted skincare with vitamins A, B, C, antioxidants, and pigment inhibitors. AHA or BHA exfoliants can speed up cell turnover and fade pigmentation faster. We love Image SPF, Aspect Dr Active C, Aspect Dr B, Cosmedix Define (A)
